Violinist Alexis Auffray, nine ropes, a pile of foam mats and a scratching tape recorder are the minimalistic set-up for this magnificent circus tale that is a kick in the guts. Fragan Gehlker plays with circus’ ultimate consequence: the fatal fall into the void. Each night he challenges himself to the extreme, putting the audience on tenterhooks, while he crawls around under the 12-meter high ceiling without a safety net.

Gehlker drew part of his inspiration for this performance from his two-month sailing experience over the Atlantic, during which he was forced to encounter the experience of void. There is no victory sweeter than finding one’s pleasure and one’s own path – either in infinite repetition or in the stubborn pursuit of endeavour without knowing the ending. Each performance is a new attempt to catch the void, seize the moment – and conquer the absurd. Fragan Gehlker’s performance belongs to the New Circus movement. He uses the circus convention not just to demonstrate acrobatic skill but also to ask about the meaning of life, the boundaries of risk and the distance between the audience and the adventurer above them, who might tumble at any moment. 

Remember: the higher you climb, the further you might fall!
